How much caffeine in Japanese matcha green tea?

Not many people, even those who enjoy matcha on a regular basis, know how much caffeine is in matcha.

In this article, we will compare the amount of caffeine in each tea and coffee.

What is caffeine?

Caffeine is a naturally occurring stimulant, primarily found in coffee, matcha tea, tea, and chocolate. It acts on the central nervous system, increasing alertness, energy, and focus.

Caffeine is also a psychoactive substance, meaning it affects the brain and can induce a state of wakefulness and mental activity.

Excessive caffeine consumption can lead to dependence, and reducing intake can cause withdrawal symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and irritability.

Content of caffeine

coffee

The amount of caffeine in 100 ml of brewed drip coffee is estimated to be 60 mg.
However, when it comes to espresso, 100 ml contains 212 mg of caffeine.
Since each cup of espresso contains about 30 ml, the actual amount of caffeine in a cup of espresso is not much different from that in a cup of coffee.

Matcha

The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan indicates that 1 g of matcha tea contains 32 mg of caffeine.
Light tea generally requires 100 to 120 ml of hot water for 2 g of matcha, which means that one cup of light tea contains 64 mg of caffeine.

Amount of caffeine in matcha latte

Our published recipe quantities call for 2 grams of matcha for one cup of matcha latte.
So a matcha latte would contain 64 mg of caffeine.
Of course, the more matcha you use, the more caffeine you get.

Do not take too much caffeine

In Japan, no clear maximum intake is indicated, but overseas, the maximum daily intake of caffeine for healthy adults is often set at 400 mg.

400 mg is equivalent to 6 cups of coffee or matcha drinks.

However, the body's response to caffeine differs from person to person, so it is important to adjust to one's own physical condition and state of health, rather than judging based on numbers alone.
